I've read a few opinions that the importance of links has been increased again, one person said that they had given up on a site all together because they had so many spammy links and lost a lot of their traffic as a result. It wasn't until this update that their rankings and traffic returned. Not very positive for those of us who follow the guidelines and were seemingly making good progress.
